The internals of a Shimano Nexus Red Band 8-speed hub that evidently was submerged in muddy water. Please, your bicycle is not a submarine! The large bearing at the right side of the hub (row of bearing balls visible in photo) makes an internal-gear hub especially vulnerable to water entry if submerged. The complexity of the internal mechanism makes such a hub very difficult if not impossible to clean out. If you might submerge your bicycle, go with derailleur gears or a single-speed, and be prepared to rebuild the bearings.
